Day 25 - Tongue to Thurso

Day 25 – Tongue to Thurso.

We leave our B&B at about 9:00. It is drizzly and misty and very atmospheric.  This is our last full day!

The road is quite busy already.  This is a main tourist route along the northern coast of Scotland with plenty of campervans but the traffic is generally well behaved and respectful of us.  Todays worry is that although our ride is only 70 km it has 5 climbs totalling at least 2400 feet (800 metres) and probably quite a lot more including minor hills.  But we get along OK.  The hotel we plan to stop for lunch is closed so we buy things from a small co-op and sit outside,  out of the cold wind and eat on a bench.
Lunch Co-op is last house on left
It looks like it will rain but it never really does rain properly. There's a light head wind most of the day.  Not a big problem but just an extra slice of energy.  I'm tired on the final hills. It is really great to see Thurso ahead. One mile downhill.  We find our B&B easily and then  visit a local cafĂ© for cake and a hot drink.
In Thurso we stay at Sandras

Our room
It is Chinese takeaway for dinner. This was  not as hard a day as I was imagining.  Now just 1/2 a day to go tomorrow morning. Thurso feels like an ancient Invercargill being so far north as Invercargill is south. We ask about the bus for tomorrow from John O'Groats to Wick once we have finished riding. We are told it's simple – no need to book. You just buy tickets on the bus.
